FOCUS
The Third Edition of the Mediterranean School on Mesoscale Meteorology (MSMM) is devoted to the probabilistic weather forecasts and especially focused on the ensemble prediction systems. Since their early applications in the nineties, probabilistic forecasts based on ensemble of numerical models (EPS) has been applied to a wide range of scales from global to mesoscale and from seasonal to short range forecast times. In the current edition of the School, the theoretical fundamentals underlying the EPS and the related issues on predictability are revised and analysed. Then, the most important applications are explored and the rational for their existence is examined. The operational application of EPS is considered with specific attention to regional and mesoscale forecasting problems.
